A gunshot was fired at the New Jersey home of CNN’s Lou Dobbs, and the anchor told listeners of his nationally syndicated radio show that he’s received threatening phone calls.

Dobbs, who is an outspoken supporter of U.S. border enforcement, said on his radio show that the incidents are part of a continued assault against those who oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.

“They’ve created an atmosphere and they’ve been unrelenting in their propaganda,” Dobbs said in reference to pro-immigration groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens and the National Council of La Raza. “Three weeks ago this morning, a shot was fired at my house where I live. My wife was standing out and that followed weeks and weeks of threatening phone calls.”

Brent Wilkes, the national executive director for League of United Latin American Citizens, told TVGuide.com that an attack by a pro-immigration organization goes against what the Latino community is fighting for. “We abhor any violence, and no one involved in our organization — or, it is my belief, in any of the other mainstream Latino organizations — would have done anything like that,” Wilkes said. “Our community has been victimized by hate crimes and violence for many years, and we know how awful it is. We would never wish that same atrocity on other people, even if we disagreed very strongly with their views.”

No one was injured in the shooting, and the New Jersey State Police said the bullet struck the siding of the home and fell to the ground without penetrating the house. Police are analyzing the bullet that was recovered, and the matter is still under investigation.

Police have noted that it is small-game season, but no hunters were found in the area, according to The Associated Press.

Dobbs said “liberal media” coverage of immigration has created hostility that has led to violent acts like the shooting at his home.

“It’s become a way of life — the anger, the hate, the vitriol — but it’s taken a different tone where they’ve threatened my wife,” Dobbs said. “They’ve now fired a shot at my house while my wife was standing next to the car.

“It’s become something else. And if anybody thinks we’re not engaged in a battle for the soul of this country right now, you’re sorely mistaken.”
